Halloween costume popularity varies from year to year, depending on events of the previous year and what movies, TV shows or books were popular that year. Any costume that comes from the movie Alice in Wonderland is going to be big this year. The Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway, that was in theaters this past year is sure to influence sales and rentals of costumes like Alice, the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the Red Queen and the Queen of Hearts and Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Shrek Forever After is also going to be the impetus for some great costumes this Halloween. Imagine going trick or treating as Shrek, Princess Fiona, Rapunzel, the Donkey or Puss N’ Boots!
You’ll be seeing plenty of Dragons and Vikings this Halloween. How to Train Your Dragon is another movie that’s spawning plenty of Halloween costumes this year. Look for Monstrous Nightmare, Terrible Terror, Night Fury, Gronckle and Hideous Zippleback. Vikings will include Fishlegs, Snotlout, Astrid, Hiccup, Stoick and Ruffnut and Tuffnut.
The movie Robin Hood will undoubtedly inspire lots of Robin Hoods, Maid Marions, King Richards and Friar Tucks. Toy Story 3 will have lots of kids dressing up for Halloween as Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Ken Doll, Peas –in-a-Pod and Lots-o’ Huggin’. Michael Jackson, a man who has inspired many a Halloween costume, will be more popular than ever this year after his death in June of 2009.
There are, of course, costumes that are popular every Halloween. They don’t require much work, they’re not usually too expensive, almost anyone can assemble them, and they’re always appropriate. These would include witches, princesses, ballerinas, pirates, cowboys, fireman and policeman, superheroes and Ninjas. Most stores that carry Halloween costumes will include either entire costumes or pieces that you can put together for a costume. Or you could just raid a closet!
